X does not know what to do.
Cessily is talking to her.
Over coffee.
It is very strange.
X-23 stiffens when Cessily asks her about Julian. Asks her if she likes Julian.
He is her teammate. He saved her life.
Of course she likes him.
But that is not enough, and Laura does not have any better answe--
That scent. She knows that scent.
A moment later X is on her feet, scanning the diner, listening intently to whatever's outside the door.
"Get out! Cessily, you have to get out. They are not here for you, they're coming to take me ba--"
That's when the explosion goes off. X dives left, pushing Cessily out of reach of the flames, keeping her protected from flying debris.
Not that she needs to. It's just instinct.
"Laura?" Cessily's voice is muzzy, and X does not have time for explanations. They're coming to get what's left of her. She can smell them.
"Get out of here Cessily. It is not safe!"
X kills one man, then another, dodging bullets and putting an end to threats.
Cessily is still not moving.
"Run!"
But it is too late.
Kimura is already there.
X goes down with an arrow to the throat. Cessily screams, and keeps on screaming until they shock her into unconsciousness.
"Load Kincaid into the containment unit. I'll take care of the clone."
Even half-dead, X knows that voice. Which is why, when she pulls the arrow out of her throat she holds it close, hidden against the curve of her arm. The guard, ignoring Kimura's order, steps closer, angling the barrel of his rifle against X's skull.
"You're dead."
He's wrong. He is. She takes him out, shoving the arrow into his throat. If there's irony there, X misses it. She's too focused on Kimura.
snikt
Her blows do nothing. They never have. But Kimura likes to talk, likes to gloat, and X takes full advantage of it.
Kimura never notices that X pulled the pin on one of her grenades.
Well--not until it's too late, anyway.
"You little--"
KABOOOOM
"I hate you, clone."
But Kimura refuses to engage X any longer. Her masters are calling. She waves at X-23 once, mockingly, as she slips into the escape vehicle.
And all X can do is watch as the truck, with Cessily inside, drives away into the night.
X does not know what to do.
But she does know how to buy herself time.
