The world is fire and falling rock. The Blackbird crashed, there is no escape that way. Forge's reprogramming of Nimrod did not hold, and it will not work a second time. Julian is hurt. Santo is down, disintegrated while protecting Julian.

The New X-men are running out of time, and out of ideas.

Until--

"The time device."

Everyone looks at Forge, hoping that this time maybe something will work.

"If we overload the time device inside Nimrod, it would detonate, taking him down from the inside out."

X's attention sharpens, gaze flicking to Nimrod and determining exactly what she thinks should happen next.

Then it's all over but the shouting.

"You can't, Nori. He'll kill you!"

"It's too dangerous!"

X has no time for this. "David's plan is sound. I will open up the Sentinel."

She's well aware that she's the only one that has a chance to survive at close range. It's--it's important that no one else die.

And then she's moving, even as her teammates are deciding who gets involved in the rest of the plan.

Claws out, X strikes at Nimrod's outer casing, intent on doing maximum damage in the minimum amount of time. One blow. Two. Adamantium screeches against softer metal, scoring deep and exposing the core of the robot.

Then, of course, Nimrod initiates countermeasures.

All X can feel is her skin burning, eyes popping in the heat as an energy beam sears the flesh from her bones.

She can only hear the rest of the battle as distant noise; the bulk of her attention is occupied by the shrieking pain of reactivating nerve ends.

It's the slowest healing she's ever experienced. And her throat is far too charred for her to even scream.

She's oddly grateful for that, even if it also prevents her from telling Julian not to waste his time. She'll heal. She always does.

But he does his best to save her anyway. It's--something new.

When her flesh is whole again, X thinks that maybe this newness is why she doesn't ever want to stop looking at him.

There really can't be any other reason.

Right?
