X slips in through the front door of her apartment, ducking down to bar Steve McQueen's passage out into the hallway.

Farrah makes her own break for it several seconds later.

Apparently she is learning from the best.

X does not sigh.

There would be very little point.

Elle seems to thin about this for a moment.

Then, "You don't have to stick around with all of them."

X frowns for a second.

Then --

"Oh."

Beat.

"I know. That."

Still, it's nothing personal to them, which is why she adds, "Sometimes it's nice to do it with different people."

X tilts her head slightly, considering.

Elle makes a point, but --

"I think I like it this way. For now."

Who knows what the future holds?

X, barring unforeseen catastrophe, is going to live for a long, long time.

Elle, on the other hand, won't.

So she simply shrugs, and leans back into the couch.

X doesn't say anything, either.

But she also leans back into the couch.

Steve McQueen takes this opportunity to jump up between them.

He is tired of being ignored.

And doing something she's never done before, Elle immediately grabs the cat, and plops him in her lap.

Steve McQueen tenses, tail flicking back and forth wildly.

Well. Laps are comfortable, so maybe this is okay.

X, watching, barks out a quick, sharp sound that might almost be her version of a laugh.

Strangely, this does not make Steve McQueen any less confused.

Beyond this, Elle doesn't do anything more than stroke his fur.

Without static electricity.

Eventually Steve McQueen starts to purr.

Then Farrah gets envious.

X bends down to scoop her up off the floor and deposit her in her own lap.

Farrah glares at Steve. Steve glares back.

X, meanwhile, mostly watches Elle.

Elle doesn't seem to be paying attention to the cat drama. Though, she also doesn't seem to be paying attention to anything in particular.

But after a few minutes, she asks, "Are you thinking about something?"

"It is good you are here."

X's voice is not quite as matter-of-fact as usual.

Close, as they say, but no cigar.

Elle doesn't answer.

But after a pause, she moves her free hand over in X's direction.

X reaches her own hand out, in turn.

If Elle will let X tangle their fingers together --

That is what X will do.
